The artwork
The Meeting of Joachim and Anne at the Golden Gate is one of Giotto di Bondone's most famous frescoes, part of the cycle dedicated to the Life of the Virgin in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua (1303-1305). The work depicts the moment when Joachim and Anne, after the angelic announcement of Mary's future birth, meet and embrace before the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. Giotto translates the sacred event into a scene of profound tenderness and humanity: the gaze and affectionate gesture of the two spouses express the love, faith, and joy of their reunion.
The architecture framing the scene lends solidity and perspective, while the warm colors and soft light create an intimate and serene atmosphere. With this composition, Giotto breaks away from Byzantine rigidity, creating a true and moving representation of human spirituality.
