The Meeting of Joachim and Anne at the Golden Gate is one of the most celebrated frescoes by Giotto di Bondone, part of the cycle devoted to the Life of the Virgin in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua (1303-1305). The artwork depicts the moment when Joachim and Anne, after the angelic announcement of the future birth of Mary, meet again and embrace before the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. Giotto translates the sacred event into a scene of profound tenderness and humanity: the gaze and the affectionate gesture of the two spouses express love, faith and the joy of reunion.
