The artwork
The Joy of Life (1905–1906) is one of Henri Matisse’s Fauvist masterpieces. The painting depicts a pastoral scene peopled with nude figures in a luminous landscape, dominated by intense, non-naturalistic colours. The sinuous lines and the use of flat areas of colour create a harmonious, almost musical atmosphere that expresses a sense of freedom, sensuality and celebration of life.
Regarded as a revolutionary work, it also profoundly influenced artists such as Picasso, opening new paths for modern painting.
