The artwork
The Lugubrious Game is a 1929 painting from Salvador Dalí's full Surrealist phase, made during his association with the Paris group led by André Breton. The work is a concentrate of the artist's obsessions: sexuality, anguish, repression and the subconscious. The composition is dominated by a male figure at the centre, with his trousers lowered, a symbol of desire and exposed vulnerability. Around him unfold fragmented scenes and enigmatic symbols: deformed faces, isolated limbs, ants and sharp objects, recurring elements of Dalí's imagery that refer to childhood fears and erotic anxieties.
The title suggests a paradox: a game that turns into unease. The picture indeed arises from the union of irony and nightmare, attraction and disgust. This work marks a fundamental step in the maturing of Dalí's paranoiac-critical language, where reality breaks apart and multiplies into powerful, disturbing psychic images.
