Gioacchino , due to his age, is unable to have children with his legitimate wife. And not having children meant being out of God 's grace at the time. His community, his acquaintances and friends, mock him and exclude him, and he goes away saddened, falling asleep exhausted in an isolated place. And so, during the dream, a benevolent Angel announces the miracle to him: his wife is expecting a child, and God has not forgotten him.
The work is dominated by the double figure of a completely immobile Joachim and the blessing Angel of great grace and gentleness. The landscape behind it was added by Giotto to give a spatiality to the scene, which acquires a visual depth and great expressive force.
