Because of his age, Joachim is unable to have children with his lawful wife. And at that time, being childless meant being outside the grace of God. His community, his acquaintances and his friends mock and shun him, and he withdraws in sorrow, falling asleep exhausted in a solitary place. And then, in his dream, a benevolent Angel announces the miracle to him: his wife is expecting a child, and God has not forgotten him.
The artwork is dominated by the twin figures of a completely motionless Joachim and of the blessing Angel, full of grace and gentleness. The landscape behind was added by Giotto to give the scene a sense of space, lending it visual depth and great expressive power.
