The artwork
Original engraving of the gates of Dolo, with a view of the city, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the lock that allows boats to access the canal. The town of Dolo develops on the other side of the canal, with its beautiful church and tall bell tower. Next to the church there are the Venetian palaces. We are in the middle of the Brenta riverbank.
The sky is clear, with a few clouds on the horizon. The work is dated 1744 and is housed at the UCL Art Museum, University College London.
