A Collector's Gallery. Picture Gallery with Views of Ancient Rome by Giovanni Paolo Pannini is a refined example of 18th-century gallery painting, a genre in which the artist excelled. The painting depicts a vast imaginary interior, built with perfect command of perspective, where numerous canvases are arranged on the walls and along the arcades, showing famous views of ancient Rome: the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the aqueducts, the temples and other classical monuments.
In the foreground, a group of figures observe and comment on the works, underlining the social role of the collection as a place of knowledge and prestige. The scene presents itself as a kind of “visual catalogue” of Rome's archaeological wonders, exalting the allure of antiquity and its educational function for contemporaries.
