The artwork
Giovanni Fattori's painting "French Soldiers of '59" is a key work in his oeuvre and a significant example of Macchiaioli painting. Created around 1859, the year of the Second Italian War of Independence, the painting depicts a group of French soldiers and a waiting officer in a simple landscape.
Fattori, interested in the events of the Risorgimento, had the opportunity to closely observe Napoleon III's troops passing through Tuscany. Not called up for military service, the artist chose to document military life, dedicating himself to numerous studies and paintings that reflect the lives of soldiers, both in action and at rest.
