The painting "French Soldiers of '59" by Giovanni Fattori is a key work in his output and a significant example of Macchiaioli painting. Made around 1859, the year of the Second Italian War of Independence, the painting depicts a group of French soldiers and an officer waiting in a spare landscape.
Fattori, interested in the events of the Risorgimento, had the opportunity to observe at close quarters the troops of Napoleon III passing through Tuscany. Not called up to arms, the artist chose to document military life, devoting himself to numerous studies and paintings reflecting the reality of soldiers, both in action and at rest.
