The artwork
The painting depicts a view of the Roman Forum with horsemen and mules, with travelers in the foreground, along with shepherds and their flock playing musical instruments. It's a typical piece created for the art market, sought after by Italians of the time and tourists.
Jacob de Heusch, a Dutch painter, received painting lessons from his uncle Willem de Heusch. In January 1675, he was first mentioned as a member of the Schildersbent, an association of primarily Dutch and Flemish painters formed in Rome. Although we don't know how long he remained in Italy, it can be assumed that he stayed for a long time, as he was mentioned in Venice in 1696, where he worked for the secretary Lucatelli. In 1699, the artist returned to Utrecht, where he died two years later.
