The artwork
La Fornarina, painted by Raffaello Sanzio around 1520, is one of the most enigmatic and fascinating portraits of the Renaissance. The work depicts a half-length, semi-nude young woman wearing a golden bracelet engraved with the name "RAPHAEL URBINAS," a clear sign of the artist. The model, traditionally identified as Margherita Luti, the daughter of a Roman baker and the painter's alleged lover, is depicted with extraordinary sweetness and sensuality.
Raphael combines realism and idealization, giving the woman's face and skin a soft, vibrant luminosity typical of his mature art. Her direct yet melancholy gaze and the modest gesture of her hand on her chest create a balance between passion and grace. Today housed in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica in Palazzo Barberini in Rome, La Fornarina remains an enduring symbol of beauty, mystery, and love in Renaissance art.
