The View of Castel Sant'Angelo is one of Giovanni Battista Piranesi's most famous engravings, made around the middle of the 18th century.
Castel Sant'Angelo, with its thousand-year history rooted in the Mausoleum of Hadrian, was an ideal subject for Piranesi. The building had already undergone numerous transformations over the centuries, passing from imperial tomb to papal fortress, with additions and alterations that bore witness to its complex evolution. In his engraving Piranesi captures this historical layering, emphasising the imposing mass of the castle and its relationship with the Tiber and the Ponte Sant'Angelo.
The artist used a combination of etching and burin to create deep contrasts and fine details, bringing to life a vibrant and dramatic atmosphere. The bold perspective and theatrical light help make the castle a majestic presence rising against the sky.
