An angel appeared to Joseph and told him to flee to Egypt with his family. King Herod's men were to kill all Jewish males under the age of two. Everything in this fresco enhances the idea of flight: the rapid trampling of feet, the line of brooding rocks, and the gestural angel in the sky. Giotto uses the fresco technique. It is a wall painting technique performed on freshly laid lime plaster.
The pigment is mixed with water and, as the plaster sets, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall.
