The artwork

Window at Tangier is a painting by Henri Matisse from 1912, made during his stay in Morocco, a period when the artist was deeply captivated by the light and colours of North Africa. The artwork depicts a window overlooking the city of Tangier, transformed by Matisse into a vibrant and harmonious composition. The intense hues – deep blues, luminous greens, pinks and oranges – evoke the warm, sensual atmosphere of the place, while the use of flat surfaces and simplified outlines reflects the artist’s pursuit of an essential and decorative painting.

The window becomes a symbol of openness to an exotic world, rich in visual and spiritual suggestion. With this picture Matisse does not simply describe a landscape, but conveys the experience of light, calm and contemplation that characterised his Moroccan period.
