The artwork
“Open Window” by Henri Matisse, painted in 1905, is a masterpiece of Fauvism. The work depicts the view from his studio in Collioure, on the sea in the South of France, showing sailing boats, the harbour and pots of flowers on the windowsill. The colours are vivid and intense, used not to reproduce reality faithfully but to convey an emotion: the blue of the sea, the green of the hills and the warm tones of the interior converse in a harmonious, vibrant contrast.
The perspective is deliberately non-realistic, with simplified forms and loose brushstrokes, typical features of the Fauves. The window is not merely an architectural element, but a metaphor for a bridge between inside and outside, between private space and the natural world. The work was shown at the Salon d’Automne in Paris and is now part of the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
