The artwork
The Last Judgement is the closing scene of the entire Scrovegni Chapel. The absolute protagonist is Christ, painted by Giotto's own hand, who divides the whole scene into two perfectly distinct parts. On the right are those who have been saved, bathed in a benevolent light and grouped in orderly ranks of the blessed, accompanied by Peter, James, John, Philip, Simon and Thomas. On the left, amid confusion and horror, are cast the damned. This is the realm of Lucifer, where Judas Iscariot can be glimpsed hanging. In the fresco we find two distinctive elements: at the bottom, the scene of the offering, where Enrico Scrovegni, who commissioned the entire work, presents the whole Chapel as a gift to the Madonna.
The placement of this detail is no accident: every 25 March, the day of the Chapel's consecration, a ray of light falls on the fresco and illuminates the hands of Enrico and the Madonna. Finally, the fourth figure in the front row of the blessed is recognisable as a self-portrait of Giotto, who wished to take part in the great scene of the Judgement.
