The artwork
Fatata te Miti (By the Sea), painted by Paul Gauguin in 1892 during his stay in Tahiti, is a vibrant celebration of the exoticism and sensuality of Polynesian life. The work depicts two young Tahitian women in an unspoilt natural setting of clear waters, lush vegetation and intense hues. Gauguin uses saturated colours and simplified forms to convey a sense of primordial purity and harmony, far from the European modernity he criticised.
The figures are depicted with a solemn, almost mythical calm, while the surrounding landscape vibrates with tropical light and warmth. The painting reflects the artist’s interest in spirituality and in a more authentic dimension of existence, which Gauguin believed he had found in indigenous cultures. Fatata te Miti is considered one of the masterpieces of his Tahitian phase and bears witness to his quest for a lost paradise through art.
