The artwork
The Lighthouse at Honfleur, painted by Georges Seurat in 1886, depicts the harbour and lighthouse of the Normandy town of Honfleur, on the northern French coast. The work captures the stillness of the seascape at sunset, with calm water reflecting the bright sky and boats moored along the quays. The lighthouse, the central element of the composition, guides the viewer’s eye and creates a sense of perspectival depth.
Seurat uses carefully modulated touches of colour, showing the first signs of the technique that would lead him to Pointillism, though without full separation of the pigments. Light and reflections are treated with great care, emphasising the harmony between natural elements and harbour structures. This work bears witness to Seurat’s transition from realism to Post-Impressionist experimentation, blending scientific observation and poetic sensitivity. Today it is held at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
