The artwork
Farm near Duivendrecht (1908) belongs to Piet Mondrian's naturalist period, before his turn towards abstraction. The painting depicts a typical Dutch farm set in a rural landscape, with red roofs and wooden structures emerging among fields and trees. Mondrian uses a warm, earthy palette of greens, browns and reds, creating a serene and harmonious atmosphere.
The artist pays great attention to light and depth, making the scene believable yet at the same time idealised. The forms are slightly simplified, anticipating his later tendency towards the geometrisation of subjects. This work testifies to Mondrian's interest in nature and Dutch rural life, but already reveals a compositional sensitivity that would lead him to formal synthesis and abstraction. Farm near Duivendrecht is an example of the artist's ability to harmonise colour, light and structure in a delicate, meditative balance.
