The artwork
Evolution (1910–1911) is one of Piet Mondrian's most significant Symbolist works and represents a key moment in his transition from figurative art to abstraction. The painting is a triptych depicting three frontal female figures, each immersed in a mystical atmosphere vibrant with colour. Mondrian explores the theme of spiritual growth and inner elevation, using Theosophical symbols and simplified forms that suggest a path of transformation.
The figures, though recognisable, are almost crystallised into geometric patterns: vertical and horizontal lines begin to emerge as the load-bearing structure of the composition. The colours – deep blues, intense reds and golden tones – help create a mystical, transcendent atmosphere. Evolution embodies Mondrian's shift from the observation of nature to a search for spiritual and universal order, a prelude to the birth of Neoplasticism.
