The artwork
The Escape Ladder (1940) by Joan Miró is a work charged with poetic and symbolic tension, made during one of the most dramatic periods in European history. The painting presents an undefined, almost cosmic space, populated by biomorphic forms, essential signs and sober colours. At the centre the ladder emerges, a recurring element in Miró's language, becoming a metaphor for escape, hope and the desire for transcendence. In a context marked by war, exile and political oppression, the ladder represents a possible way to salvation, fragile but necessary.
The floating figures and the absence of a stable perspective evoke an unstable, restless world, reflecting the collective anguish of the time. At the same time, the lightness of the signs and the poetic use of colour suggest an inner resistance, showing how imagination and art can offer a form of freedom even in the darkest moments.
