A spectacular and rare painting of the eruption of Vesuvius in 1774 by night, with a detail of the lava gushing out and flowing, made by Jakob Philipp Hackert. In the foreground are three onlookers, members of an expedition, watching one of nature's most spectacular sights. The red of the swiftly flowing lava creates steam that lights up the night.
The painting can be admired at the Neue Galerie, Kassel, Germany.
