The artwork
Original and rare view of the 18th-century eruption of Mount Etna, painted by Jakob Philipp Hackert. The great volcano is in the foreground; it's winter and there's snow in the valley. Lava, fire, and a great black smoke pour from the main crater. The sky is depicted in shades of dark blue, gradually deepening to azure. The landscape is desolate, without a trace of humanity, and nature reigns supreme.
The painting is exhibited at the State Open-air Museum 'Palace Gatchina' in St. Petersburg.
