An original and rare view of the 18th-century eruption of Etna, made by Jakob Philipp Hackert. In the foreground is the great volcano; it is winter and there is snow in the valley. Lava, fire and a great black plume of smoke pour from the main crater. The sky is depicted in shades ranging from dark blue to deep azure. The landscape is desolate, with no trace of humans; nature dominates with its power.
The painting is on display at the State Open-air Museum 'Palace Gatchina', St Petersburg.
