The artwork
Pontormo was about twenty when he painted this hospital scene, and for a long time nobody thought it was his. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- A hospital scene from the early sixteenth century, painted in fresco.
- A horizontal format for above a console table, a sofa or a desk.
- A gift for a doctor, for anyone who works in a hospital, for anyone who loves Florence.
The fresco was in the hospital of San Matteo in Florence, in the rooms that now house the Galleria dell'Accademia. The subject is a miraculous healing by Blessed Humility, a nun who lived in the thirteenth century.
In the eighteenth century it was detached from the wall, and for a long time it passed as a work by Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo's master. It was the art historian Carlo Gamba who gave it back to him, and Bernard Berenson confirmed it. Today it is considered one of his earliest works, from 1513-1514.
From the Accademia, which holds it, it has come to the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome.
In a doctor's study or an entrance hall, it is the gift for those who take care of others and for anyone who loves discovering the first steps of great painters.
