The artwork
This picture, painted in 1870, belongs to the context of Risorgimento history painting and refers to a specific moment of the Third Italian War of Independence, when Italian troops clashed with the Austrians at the Battle of Custoza on 24 June 1866, which ended in defeat for Italy.
Fattori focuses on a more intimate and realistic moment of the battle: the rescue of the wounded Prince Amedeo of Savoy, who is being helped towards the ambulance. This choice reflects Fattori's approach, which, even when painting historical events, tends to depict the more human and less celebratory aspects of war.
