The artwork
Original and luminous 18th-century view of a detail of the Grand Canal, with two gondolas, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The water is painted in shades of blue-green, with a mirrored effect for the silhouettes of the two gondolas. A distinctive feature of the painting are the covered gondolas, typical of the 18th century, which are no longer used today and have been replaced by open-air gondolas. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated.
The work is exhibited at the Louvre in Paris.
