An original, luminous and rare 18th-century view of an English rural landscape, a capriccio with a palace, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The large tree on the left side of the picture stands out, concealing the ruin of an archway, at the foot of which are scenes of everyday life. On the opposite side, partly in shadow, is the London palace, beneath which flows a river. In the background is a small hill with a little village. The sky is clear, with no clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1754. Canaletto created two other variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA.
