An original and rare 18th-century view of an English capriccio depicting a column, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The column stands on the right side of a road busy with travellers, leading to a nearby village. At the foot of the column is a young girl; not far from the column is a Romanesque arch, the river and, further back, a town. The sky is clear, with no clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1754. Three other variants of this work exist.
The painting is on display at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA.
