The artwork

The Elephants is a famous Surrealist painting by Salvador Dalí from 1948. The work depicts two imposing elephants walking through a desert landscape at dusk, their relatively small bodies borne on extremely thin, endless legs, like stilts. Each elephant carries a golden obelisk, a reference to Baroque symbolism and the sculpture of Bernini.

These fantastic animals present a visual paradox: creatures that normally embody strength and solidity are turned into unstable figures, suspended on fragile legs. The contrast between power and precariousness expresses one of the central themes of Dalí's art: the tension between desire and fear, greatness and vulnerability. The empty landscape, the unreal light and the elongated composition heighten the dreamlike atmosphere, in which the elephants become symbols of spiritual aspiration and mental metamorphosis. The work is an icon of Surrealism, able to turn real elements into visions of pure imagination.
