The artwork

An original view of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore from 1664 by Lievin Cruyl, in pen and brown ink with brush and grey wash over graphite. The Basilica dominates the picture; in the background, behind the square, are some townhouses in the distance. The square in front of the Basilica is portrayed empty except for a few townspeople. Cruyl probably wanted the Basilica to stand out to the viewer’s eye.
