A splendid, historical view of Piazza Barberini in 18th-century Rome, which Lievin Cruyl depicts in great detail. The view is taken obliquely from above; on a terrace of the palace on the opposite side of the square an onlooker gazes at the scene. In the square are scenes of everyday life, with the fountain prominent in the centre, but the finest details are reserved for the Roman palaces. The work was made with pen and brown ink and brush and grey wash over graphite. A similar version of this work exists.
