The rare Dutch edition of the German caricatural map of Europe during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, created by Arnold Neumann, represents an exceptional example of satirical cartography that allegorizes the political and military situation in Europe at that time. The map depicts each European nation as a human figure or a caricatural symbol embodying specific characteristics, roles, and tensions of each country in the context of the Franco-Prussian conflict. France is shown losing the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, which are held tightly by Germany, represented in a playful attitude with these "prey." Other countries like England, Italy, and Russia are humanized and involved in symbolic situations, with humorous and critical details reflecting the alliances, rivalries, and geopolitical interests of the time.
This map is an artistic testament to Neumann's ability to synthesize the European reality of the late 19th century into complex and ironic images. Originally printed in Germany, the Dutch edition made this work even rarer and more sought after, with few known copies in institutional collections. The precision of the drawing, combined with the richness of symbols and the vibrancy of colors, offers the viewer not only a geographical reading but also a social and political satire of Europe during the Franco-Prussian War.
