The artwork

Two young men side by side, one holding a sheet with a passage from Cicero on friendship: Pontormo turns it into a double portrait that is also a declaration. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • Two faces side by side, two different characters in the same painting.
  • It suits a study, a bookcase or a sitting room.
  • The gift for a friend, for a lifelong friendship.

The sheet one of the two young men holds carries a passage from Cicero's De amicitia, the Latin treatise on friendship: a refined way of saying what binds them. Pontormo painted them between 1523 and 1524, the years when he fled the plague to the Certosa del Galluzzo and painted the Passion for the monks.

The painting belongs to the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice. At the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome it hangs beside Bronzino's Lady in Red; Bronzino was Pontormo's pupil, and that portrait was long attributed to the master himself. Two friends, and beside them a master and a pupil: the room, too, speaks of bonds.

In a study, a bookcase or a sitting room: it is the gift for a lifelong friend, for a fellow student, for anyone who believes friendship deserves a portrait.
