The artwork
Women of Algiers by Pablo Picasso strikes at once with its dense, sensual energy full of visual tension. The female figures, set in a rich and fragmented space, create a scene that vibrates with colour, movement and mystery, with a force that can transform a room and instantly draw the eye. It is an ideal work for those who love Picasso at his most mature, bold and overwhelming, able to unite decorative allure and expressive intensity in a single image.
Painted in 1955, it was also conceived as a tribute to Henri Matisse, who had died the year before. Picasso reworks the theme of the harem, distorting the bodies, multiplying the viewpoints and building a composition in which colour, line and rhythm take centre stage. Version “O” is the most famous of the series and in 2015 was sold by Christie's for 179.4 million dollars, setting what was then an auction record for a painting.
