The artwork
The Weeping Woman by Pablo Picasso has an extremely powerful, almost immediate emotional impact, because it turns grief into pure image. The face shattered by tears, the vivid colours and the handkerchief clutched in her hands create an intense, nervous scene that is impossible to view with detachment.
Painted in 1937, The Weeping Woman is an oil on canvas held at Tate Modern in London and is closely linked to the world of Guernica, whose theme of suffering it takes up and develops. The figure is generally identified as Dora Maar, Picasso's companion and muse in those years, and the painting belongs to a series in which the artist concentrates all the expressiveness of grief in a single fragmented, lacerated face. This very image has been read as a universal representation of suffering, beyond the individual portrait and beyond the historical context from which it arose.
