The artwork

“Woman with a Hat” (in French Femme au chapeau) is an oil painting on canvas made by Henri Matisse in 1905. The work portrays the artist’s wife, Amélie, in a half-length portrait with a wide, decorated hat, a fan in her hand and a glove on her arm. Matisse adopts loose brushstrokes and non-realistic colours — patches of green, purple, yellow and pink dominate the face and dress — creating an expressive rather than descriptive effect.

Shown at the Salon d’Automne that same year, it caused a scandal for its bold use of colour and its “unfinished” style. This portrait is considered emblematic of Fauvism and is now part of the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
