The artwork
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884-1886) is Georges Seurat's supreme masterpiece and the emblem of pointillism. The work depicts a scene of leisure along the Seine, with middle-class and working-class figures in a park, captured in moments of calm and contemplation. Seurat uses the innovative technique of pointillism, applying thousands of tiny dots of pure colour which, combined by the viewer's eye, generate luminosity, chromatic harmony and depth. The composition is rigorously studied: the figures, dogs, boats and trees are organised in a geometric balance that guides the eye across the whole scene.
The work is not only a depiction of Sunday life in 19th-century Paris but also an experiment in visual perception, the contrast of complementary colours and formal harmony. La Grande Jatte remains an icon of modern art and a triumph of the scientific analysis of colour.
