A historical and original view of the port of Messina with a detail of workers loading goods, made by Jakob Philipp Hackert. The ships are moored at the quay, their tall masts prominent. Some merchants are bargaining while the dockers wait for the order to load the goods. The harbour quay is a small market. The painting highlights the toil of the workers, engaged in the hard work of handling and loading goods. A similar version of this work by the same artist exists.
The painting is on display at the National Museum of San Martino & Certosa, Naples.
