The artwork

The detail of "Death and the Miser" by Hieronymus Bosch, painted at the end of the 15th century, is a powerful example of the Flemish artist's ability to combine moral symbolism with grotesque fantasy. The work illustrates the moment of death of a man obsessed with wealth, surrounded by objects and symbols that recall greed and the obsession with money. Bosch emphasises the fragility of the human condition, showing how material possessions cannot protect against the inevitable fate of death. The caricatured details and distortions of the figures heighten the satirical, admonitory tone of the painting.

Every element, from the precious objects to the symbolic instruments, contributes to a moral narrative on vanity, selfishness and the transience of earthly goods. The work invites the viewer to reflect on spirituality, virtue and the true wealth of the soul, recurring themes in Bosch's art.
