The artwork
The Dead Christ (also known as the Lamentation over the Dead Christ or the Dead Christ and Three Mourners) is one of Andrea Mantegna's most famous paintings, a tempera on canvas (68x81 cm (26.8 x 31.9 in)), uncertainly dated to 1470-1474 or to 1483 and held in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
The work is renowned for the dizzying perspective foreshortening of the recumbent figure of Christ, which has the peculiarity of "following" viewers who fix their eyes on his feet as they walk past the picture.
