The Customs House at Varengeville is a painting by Claude Monet, made between 1881 and 1882. The work depicts the customs house building at the top of the cliff at Varengeville-sur-Mer, in Normandy, an area that Monet visited and painted on several occasions.
Monet was fascinated by the possibility of depicting the same subject in different lighting conditions, and Varengeville, with its cliffs plunging into the English Channel, offered an ideal stage for these observations.
The painting thus belongs to Monet's mature output, in which attention shifts from depicting the subject itself to visual perception and the sensations it evokes through colour and brushwork. An enquiry into nature and its elements, caught at a precise yet fleeting moment.
