Giotto’s fresco of the Crucifixion, in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and dating from 1303-1305, represents one of the most intense moments of the pictorial cycle devoted to the Passion of Christ. The work stands out for its deep bond with traditional iconography, placing at the centre the cross of Jesus surrounded by grieving angels, with Mary Magdalene kissing Christ’s feet in the foreground and, on either side, the groups of women and soldiers taking part in the scene.
The detail and quality of the execution reveal the supreme artistic level attained by Giotto.
