The artwork

In the autumn of 1890 Monet paid for the grainstacks near his house to stay in the field all winter: he wanted to keep painting them, and this snowy morning is one of the pictures that came of it. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • Two stacks in the snow, with the pink sky of early morning.
  • Blue shadows and rosy light, delicate in a bedroom.
  • A gift for anyone who waits every year for the first snow.

Thanks to that arrangement, by the following summer Monet had painted them at least thirty times, at different hours and in different seasons. It was the first time he had devoted a series to a single subject, changing only the colour, the composition, the light and the weather.

He began outdoors, in front of the stacks, and then reworked each canvas in the studio to bring its colours into harmony. Here the pink of the sky returns in the reflections on the snow, and the blue of the shadows reappears in the light on the stacks, the roofs and the ground. Raised brushstrokes give the stacks the solidity of small buildings, while the houses in the background are blurred patches close up and become clear from a distance.

The original is in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Hung in a bedroom or a bright corridor, it brings the silence of a winter morning into your home. It is a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves to wake early and look out of the window.

Monet painted this subject several times, in different light and seasons: if you prefer another version, write to us and we will prepare it for you.
