The artwork

These are not haystacks but stacks of wheat, carefully built and covered in straw: for their owners they were, quite literally, the household's wealth. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • Two red stacks in the low evening light, with the hills behind.
  • Autumn reds, oranges and violets, warm in a living room or a dining room.
  • A gift for anyone who loves the countryside and harvest time.

The art historian Robert Herbert explained the difference. A stack of wheat was built with more care than a pile of hay: the sheaves were tied and covered with a roof of straw, because the harvest was inside. That is why Herbert calls them literally the wealth of their owners.

The field was the one next to Monet's house at Giverny, in Normandy, with hills and trees in the background. Monet had rented the house since 1883, and in November 1890, while he was working on these paintings, he bought it.

He painted the stacks from the end of summer 1890 to February 1891. Here it is autumn, at the end of the day, and the low sun turns the stacks red and the hills violet.

The original is in the Art Institute of Chicago.

In a dining room or a country house it brings the warm colour of the harvest. It is a gift for anyone who works the land, or grew up surrounded by it.
