"The Corniche near Monaco" is a painting by Claude Monet from 1884. The work captures a coastal landscape of the French Riviera, showing a road winding over a hill with the Mediterranean Sea in the background. Monet often travelled in search of new subjects and atmospheres to paint, and the French Riviera, with its intense light and vivid colours, fascinated him.
The "Corniche" of the title was at the time a narrow mountain path, whereas today it is a main road between Nice and Monaco. The picture presents a scene with a solitary figure walking along the path, and the short shadows suggest that the sun is high in the sky. The colours Monet uses, such as reds, greens and blues, glow and create a vibrant effect, capturing the luminous atmosphere of the region.
