The work of reproduction

Topographic map by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Dedicated to Cardinal Alessandro Albani and which reports with truly spectacular precision the main points of the city of Rome at the time. from Palazzo Altemps to the Quattro Fontane, from Palazzo Albani to Palazzo Colonna.

Piranesi is an eclectic and versatile artist, whose creative talent cannot be easily categorized within a scheme based on artistic styles or movements. With a double Venetian and Roman cultural root, Piranesi presents a complex artistic identity that can be divided into three fundamental components.

Piranesi's art has its roots in the Rococo tradition, of which he is considered one of the last representatives. The influence of Rococo is manifested not only in the quality of his designs, which are nuanced and evocative, but above all in the very nature of his works. These works are conceived as imaginative inventions, as is underlined on the frontispiece of the Carceri. With this exquisitely rococo term, Piranesi intended to highlight the imaginative and unusual character of his creations.
