The artwork
"Peasant Woman with a Rake" by Kazimir Malevich, painted between 1928 and 1932, belongs to the artist's mature figurative period, following the Suprematist phase. The work depicts a peasant woman standing, holding a rake, set in an essential, almost suspended rural landscape. The forms, though recognisable, are built from geometric volumes and flat colours, creating a balance between representation and abstraction. The face, reduced to a surface devoid of expression, conveys a sense of anonymity, as if the figure were a symbol of the entire farming class rather than a specific person.
Malevich thus expresses the harsh reality of the Soviet countryside during the upheavals of the early Stalinist period, while at the same time exalting the dignity of manual labour. The simple composition, the bold colour range and the frontality of the figure give the work a strong iconic quality and a silent yet powerful tension.
