The work

Constantine XI Palaiologos, the last Emperor of the Romans, reigned from 6 January 1449 until 29 May 1453, the date of his death during the siege of Constantinople, which was carried out by the Ottoman Empire and which put an end to the Byzantine Empire after 1058 years of existence.

This is the only known image of the Emperor, portrayed in his mature age with the symbols of imperial power and the Palaeologus family.
