The artwork
Concert given by Cardinal de La Rochefoucauld at the Argentina Theatre in Rome, on the Marriage of Louis the Dauphin by Giovanni Paolo Pannini celebrates the lavish ceremonies organized in Rome in honor of the marriage between Louis Ferdinand of Bourbon, Dauphin of France and son of Louis XV, and Maria Josepha of Saxony. The event, promoted by Cardinal de La Rochefoucauld, French ambassador to the Holy See, had a clear political and diplomatic value: to establish and make visible the alliance between the French monarchy and the powerful House of Saxony, connected to the balance of power in Poland and the Habsburg Empire. Rome, although external to this agreement, served as an ideal stage to display prestige and influence before the international community.
Pannini, a master of architectural views, uses the interior of the Teatro Argentina as a theatrical setting for European politics. The monumental perspective, the meticulous depiction of the hall, and the representation of the aristocratic audience transform the concert into an allegory of French magnificence. Beyond its documentary value, the painting also testifies to the role of the arts, music, entertainment and painting, as instruments of representation and diplomacy in the heart of the eighteenth century.
