The work
Commodus was a Roman emperor from 177 to 192, known for his extravagant, cruel and depraved ways, similar to figures such as Caligula and Nero. Son of Marcus Aurelius, he became co-emperor in 177 and full emperor upon his father's death. He was opposed to the Senate, ruling in an authoritarian manner and also performed as a gladiator. Despite his negative reputation, he exercised religious tolerance and promoted the arts. His reign ended with assassination by a senatorial plot
