An original 18th-century view of the Column of Marcus Aurelius, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the column, rising on a pedestal in the centre of the square. In the small square are figures and scenes of everyday life. At the end of the square is a palace with a fine church behind it. Canaletto has included many architectural details in this painting. The sky is serene with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated, and is part of a private collection.
