The artwork
Original and luminous 18th-century view of the Thames with Westminster Bridge in London, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The painting was done in pen and brown ink with gray watercolor on paper. The great London river, with its boats of various sizes, is prominent, while Westminster Bridge is depicted in the background. On the right bank of the Thames, the London buildings and the lighthouse can be seen. The sky has dark clouds on the horizon, but the day remains clear.
There are three variations of this work painted by Canaletto. The work is dated 1746 and is exhibited at the Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, USA.
